Defense of Marriage or Civil Rights?

The only threat to the marriage between a man and a woman are the problems between that man and that woman. Anyone that tells you gay marriage threatens his marriage has unresolved issues he is too conservative to discuss in public. Of course, I am talking about President George W. Bush.

In a five minute press conference held a few days ago [details,] the President stated that, "our nation must enact a constitutional amendment to protect marriage in America." After his statement, the President immediately left the room, declining to answer many questions, the most obvious of which is, "Mr. President, why would being able to marry another man threaten your marriage?"

Presidents more comfortable with their sexuality, and there are many, might find a law against thong bikinis would more effectively protect their marriages, but President Bush seems to be threatened by gay marriage. Does the President really prefer same-sex promiscuity?

Of course he doesn’t, because this is not about defending marriage. It is about civil rights. It is about denying a specific group of Americans many of the privileges that come with marriage, like tax breaks and medical/insurance benefits. It is about creating a "separate but equal" class of marriage that should make all of us uncomfortable.
