respect the work McCain did as a freshman senator in the eighties. I
have become concerned about some of his most recent policies, but
watching his bio, there are some obvious holes biographers tend to leave
out.
Modern biographers describe McCain as a a war hero, and he is. Few have
suffered more for their country, but what is surprising is how much of
his suffering is due to his own mistakes. Everyone knows of his
experience as a POW, few take time to explain that he was shot down
partly BECAUSE he was flying off course. Much is also made of his heroic
escape from a Skyhawk on the USS Forrestal, but few talk about the fact
that this was the FOURTH jet he had lost.

In fact, by the age of 45, he had screwed up nearly everything he tried.
He barely got into the Naval Academy. He barely graduated (fifth from
the bottom). He crashed 5 planes before being captured by the
Vietnamese. and upon returning home, promptly crashed his first marriage
by cheating on his disabled wife with many women including his current
wife.
His success, like Bush's, comes from his parents. He was a famous POW
BECAUSE he was the son and grandson of famous admirals. His father's
stature helped him secure a career-changing appointment as the Navy's
liaison to the Senate. He left this role to be a VP for his father in
law's beer bottling company and used that connection to run for Senate
in Arizona. Again, I am a fan of his early Senate career, but anyone
that describes the first 46 years of his life as admirable is lying.
