I am increasingly concerned with the McCain-Palin “guilt by association” game. There is nothing wrong with Arab friends. Bush and Cheney have far more Arab associates than Obama. We should not judge them poorly for these associations, but judge them on their ability to use them on our behalf.
Our leaders must be able to understand and work with many different kinds of people. One of my drinking buddies in college was an ex-con who did time for starting bar fights after Dr. King was assassinated. He was a white racist. You can infer nothing about my agenda or beliefs from his past. I would have definitely been one of his targets during his early years. But I am a better man because I knew him. He is too.
