HUNTERSVILLE – Kayla Goldsberry will perform her first principal role as Clara in Piedmont Dance Theatre’s production of “The Nutcracker.”
Goldsberry, 14, of Huntersville, attends Davidson Day School. The eighth-grader started dancing in ballet, tap and jazz when she was 4 years old.
In 2012, she moved to the Charlotte area, where she has continued her classical ballet training at Piedmont School of Music & Dance under the direction of Daniel and Rebecca Wiley.
“I feel so honored to have been chosen to perform this role by people that I really love and respect,” Goldsberry said.
Her ultimate goal is to attend The Juilliard School in New York and perhaps someday dance on Broadway, then eventually open a dance studio of her own.
For inspiration, she looks to American Ballet Theatre soloist Misty Copeland, one of the first African-American ballerinas to garner international acclaim. She’ll see Copeland perform as Clara in ABT’s “Nutcracker” next month in New York.
“The Nutcracker” begins its run at 7 p.m. Dec. 12 and 2 p.m. Dec. 13 at Kannapolis Performing Arts Center. Tickets cost $20 for adults and $15 for youth.
The theater will join forces with the Salisbury Symphony Orchestra for two performances Dec. 20-21.
