I read the sections in the book and the Bible and have been thinking hard on the subject of scapegoating over the weekend. Four somewhat related thoughts keep ringing in my ears.:

Thank You,
- Hitler as a scapegoat:
- Jews were persecuted throughout European history, long before Hitler came along (link). Persecutions like the Inquisition and other Pogroms were common. The only relatively safe place to hide was Poland. Only 2% of ~6M Jews killed in the Holocaust were killed Germany. Half were hiding in Poland, mostly because of prior atrocities. Noone asks why the Jews were all hiding in Poland when Hitler marched in.
- Black Migration to the urban North
- Black migration in the US is similar to Jewish migration across Europe.
- Isabelle Wilkerson's other book, The Warmth of Other Suns, talks about Black migration from the South to North. We don't often talk about why Black rural farmers moved to the cities which would have been more natural for them. Jobs doesn't explain why Black disproportionately huddled in the cities. The answer is that the rural and suburban North was also dangerous. My family in Detroit is still afraid to venture west of Detroit, partially due to the segregationist policies of the mayors west of the city (link).
- They also selectively funded schools in these segregated areas, putting Blacks further behind in the greater metro area, essentially reversing Brown vs Board of Education (1954, link) with Milliken vs Bradley (1974, link), which said separate but unequal is OK if the unequal school is a separate district where Blacks can't live.
- If I don't tell my children that my parents forced Black people to live in Detroit where the district was defunded. My children are free to preserve these school district lines without feeling racist.
- Chicken Nuggets and Fish Sticks
- Hiding history is what we do best. We invented the Chicken Nugget (link) a miraculous process that allows children to consume all of the benefits of being carnivorous without any of the guilt.
- My grandmother, who was born on a farm, brought a live chicken home once. Her children had never been forced to wring a chicken's neck, defeather it, and tear the meat from its bones. That was all done for them.
- I'm not a vegetarian, and I don't pretend to be one either.
- Banning critical race theory is like scapegoating and eating chicken nuggets.
Thank You,
